Cds FOLK PAGAN Y VIKING METAL
El folk metal es un subgénero del Heavy Metal relativamente pequeño y no muy fácil de diferenciar. Su peculiaridad es la influencia de elementos folk sobre una base normalmente metálica, que puede dar paso a la de black metal clásico (aunque a veces esta base es de black metal sinfónico) y en ocasiones Death Metal. Por ejemplo, Cruachan, una de las bandas más importantes dentro del folk metal, tiene una base metálica más parecida al heavy metal clásico, y desde luego nada parecida al black metal. Aún así, el folk metal se suele encuadrar como descendiente del black metal, debido a que la mayoría de bandas de este estilo toman al black metal como punto de partida; si tomamos como ejemplo Aes Dana o Myrkgrav, se pude observar una base de Black Metal evidente, pero aún así el Black Metal no es lo que especifíca principalmente a este género.
La temática varia dependiendo la vertiente, ya sea de la tradición tanto vikinga como celta; los instrumentos más comunes suelen ser gaitas, whistles, flautas, acordeones…que acompañan siempre a los intrumentos clásicos de la música metal.
Como casi todos los subgéneros , su categorización no es clara. Es difícil distinguir, comúnmente, los grupos de folk metal con respecto a los de Celtic Metal o Viking Metal, ya que simplemente es una característica temática. Incluso cuando se engloba también en Pagan Metal la clasificación es difícil.
También se puede conocer al Folk metal como Green metal, si el estilo o contenido lírico del grupo está ambientado al naturalismo; preservación de la paz, ecología e igualdad entre los seres vivos.
Origen
Probablemente el primer grupo de folk metal (o, por lo menos, en hacerlo conocido) fue Skyclad con su álbum de 1991 ‘Wayward Sons Of Mother Earth’. El estilo en este disco es una base de NWOBHM con claras influencias de folk celta. En ese mismo estilo también destaca la banda americana The Lord Weird Slough Feg, que en 2005 pasó a llamarse sólo Slough Feg. Sus discos, entre los que destaca Twilight of the Idols (1999) y Down Among the Deadmen (2000), combinan el heavy metal de raíces más ochenteras con instrumentos y melodías de clara inspiración celta. En Hispanoamérica destaca el grupo Kranium, que mezcla el heavy metal con el folk de los Andes y el pasado milenario de la cultura inca, siendo así la primera banda en Sudamerica en lograr esta fusión, hoy en su país PERU muchas bandas siguen los pasos que Kranium forjó en esta parte del contienente Americano.
Actualmente, el folk metal se está abriendo paso rápidamente en la zona norte europea. Países tales como Alemania, España y Finlandia generan hoy en día la mayoría de grupos que crean melodías folclóricas nórdicas con una base heavy metal. Claramente, se diferencian ahora grupos como Saurom, In Extremo, Morgenstern, Ensiferum o Schattentanz de grupos como Skyclad, Cruachan o Waylander que se les considera Celtic Metal, ya que esta catalogación le es más justa al sonido celta conseguido por sus instrumentos. También se conocen combinaciones de Folk con Power metal en grupos como Elvenking que se caracteriza por el uso de violín en sus canciones.
Dentro del folk metal con una base de black metal es destacable el grupo Waylander, Falkenbach, Finntroll, Korpiklaani o el grupo chileno Folkheim.
Subgéneros
Viking Metal
Rama del folk metal que se centra en temas sobre la mitología y cultura nórdica. No se suelen utilizar con tanta frecuencia los instrumentos típicos del folk, pero la presencia de teclados y las letras basadas en batallas o dioses hacen de este un subgénero más épico que el folk metal. Su base puede ser de cualquier tipo de metal, aunque los más comunes son el Black y el Death Metal, existen otros tantos como Power o Heavy Metal clásico.
Celtic Metal
Esta vertiente se concentra en la cultura celta de Europa central y occidental. Los instrumentos típicos por excelencia suelen ser gaitas, flautas, violines, zanfonías…sus temas tratan con preferencia la mitología celta o los pueblos antiguos celtas. Al igual que el viking, la base del celtic puede variar, pero es común los que combinan los ritmos celtas con Black o Death, en menor escala. Algunos grupos de celtic metal son Eluveitie, Aes Dana, Heol Telwen, Skiltron, Geasa, Waylander o Crystalmoors. En España cabe destacar como grupo de celtic metal a Mägo de Oz.
